چکیده

The sense of smell is one of the essential tools for all living things to survive. For example, it enables them to escape from danger in advance or find food to sustain life [1,2]. For human beings, it also has been crucial function for better quality of life. There has been a recent increase in diseases associated with olfactory dysfunction as shown in Fig. 1 [3]. Moreover, because many patients with olfactory dysfunction have often complained of their olfactory functions as well as reported of chronic pain, olfactory dysfunction must not be neglected anymore [4]. In addition, the olfactory function has been considered to be one of the biological markers associated with various diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease [5], Parkinson disease [6], multiple sclerosis [7], and brain tumor. Thus, the evaluation of olfactory function will shed some light to understand the function of the human olfactory system as well as assess the olfaction value in day-to-day life [2]. The methods for assessing the olfactory function are largely divided into electrophysiological and psychophysical methods. The psychophysical inspections such as University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), The Sniffin’ Stick, and T & T Olfactometer [7-9], are methods mostly based on questionnaires or simple apparatus. Normally, the evaluator presents a fragrance and then evaluates subjectively the subject’s awareness of smelling, whereas the electrophysiological tests evaluate olfactory function based on objective measurement such as biosignals and medical imaging. In this paper, we review the overall evaluation methods of olfactory functions and suggest complementary points to improve conventional technologies.

Background: Olfaction plays an important role in human life and promotes quality of life through understanding various odors. Nasal polyps are among the common causes of olfactory impairment. There are many different treatment options for polyps most notably the diagnosis and elimination of underlying causes. Some polyps do not respond to medication therapy or they relapse, and therefore requir...

Comparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.  Material...

Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight

The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...

Evaluation of gustatory and olfactory function among premenopausal and postmenopausal women and men

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The sense of taste is a chemical sense which allows everyone to perceive the flavor of what is eaten or drunk. Also, the sense of olfaction is also a chemical sense contributing to the sense of taste to perceive the taste and flavor of food. In the present work, the gustatory and olfactory function in pre- and postmenopausal women and men were studied and compared to each ot...

O-9: The Central Role of Mitochondrial Function in Quality of Human Oocyte

Background: Mitochondria are the most aboudent and small essential organelles found in eukaryotic cells. These are semiautonomous organelles for the production of cellular ATP that through its various biochemical pathways. The primary pathway for ATP production is OXPHOS via the electron transfer chain (ETC) which is encoded by nuclear DNA and mtdna genomes. Mitochondria consist of double stran...
